Defrag Your Hard Disk

You have heard of the term "defragging your disk", well let’s look at how and why you should do it.

Your hard disk stores files in fragments. This means that all parts that make up the file can be stored on different parts of the disk. So when you retrieve the file, Windows needs to grab all the different parts and put them together. If you have a huge hard disk with thousands of files, you can probably see why this will slow down performance.

Defrag for Better Performance

By defragmenting your hard disk, you reduce the overhead needed and improve performance. Defragging essentially puts the fragmented parts of the file together. This makes disk access much quicker.

You should defrag your disk on a regular basis, at least once every couple of weeks. You will enjoy the new found performance.

Here is how you can defrag your disk:

  • Click Start -> Computer
  • Right click on the disk you wish to defrag and select Properties
  • Click on the Tools tab
  • Click on Defragment now..
  • Done

The defrag might take a bit of time depending on disk size.
